Vocabulary of need questions the rhythmic modalities of the group by developing an orchestral language for eight dancers, inspired by J.S. Bach’s Partita in D minor.

“Music and sound are fundamental sources of inspiration in my work. I’m interested in exploring the relations that can be created between music and movement rhythm. How do they divulge each other, how do they decompose and recompose space, how do they embody it? How the human being is revealed through their interaction?

Simultaneously with this research, I am also examining the individual’s relationship with a group. How does an ensemble of unique individuals bring alive a shared space? What kind of rituals can we imagine in order to create a feeling of belonging?

Today, I would like to confront a major work in the history of music, Bach’s Partita in D minor, BWV 1004. When I listened to this universal, timeless piece, I was touched and inspired by its emotional force. As a contemporary artist and choreographer, I would like to offer my dancers and the audience an encounter with this music, an opportunity to connect to something bigger, something spiritual.”

“Music is at the heart of Yuval Pick’s work. For Vocabulary of need, he immerses himself in the music of Johann Sebastian Bach, specifically the sublime Partita No.2 in D minor. By putting a community on stage that is searching for meaning, that is anchored to the earth and tends to rise up, he subtly underlines the spirituality of this masterpiece of baroque music.”

“More than ever, he places vocabulary at the fore of a score for which he has developed a language that is highly articulate, sharp, complex, calligraphic and sculpted with great precision for his eight dancers. The variations are infinite, the dancers arrive in waves and withdraw like the sea.”
