« Distance to distance, in space like in time. Significant gaps in between, from time to time. »
Social bonds are a recurring theme in the choreographic work of Sylvie Pabiot (A strait, 2005; Rezo, 2008; On a provisional basis, 2012), as she considers dance as a place where society and interpersonal relationships are interpreted.
Every now and then narrates the erosion of social bonds in a time when our physical encounters are farther and farther apart in time and space.
The social ties uniting us have undergone a profound change since the 60’s.
Our individual liberties rose, while bringing along the erosion of our sense of community. Traditional patterns of family, work, religious groups, friendships have vanished, giving way to new ways of being. The ensuing digital revolution is growing every day, extending this profound transformation of our relations to the community, to others, and to ourselves.
Thanks to a non-stop digital connection, I am always tied to the absence: of people away from me, but also of myself, since I am extracting myself from the present time/space to join another one, a virtual one.
The multiplication of online presence possibilities creates a lack of presence in that which is physically here and now.
Physical isolation is akin to social isolation, despite “social medias”, the permanent connection, the multiple ways of being “together”. Our relation to time and space is completely disrupted, and our adjustments come as fast as our technological evolution.
In this context, how can the lonely, adaptable, available, human being, entrepreneur of his own life, still feel a sense of unity with others?
How can we maintain relationships with people we only meet every now and then?
Finally, how is the public space a reflection of our society?
